College Hoops Notes

Thursday January 31, 2008
Lots to cover today, so let's take a quick trip around the NCAA...

  • Women Glow, Men Chunder
We're down to one unbeaten team in Division I; mighty Kansas lost at Kansas State, 84-75. The loss was the Jayhawks' first at K-State in 25 years; the last time Kansas lost at their in-state rivals' place, Men at Work's Down Under was the number one song on the pop charts.

(Thanks to this morning's SportsCenter for pointing out that tidbit, inspiring the title for this item and firmly planting that tune in my head for the day.)

K-State was led, as usual, by all-universe freshman Michael Beasley, who seems intent on cementing his status as the consensus number one pick in this summer's NBA draft. But massive production from Beasley is a given. For the Wildcats to make noise in the Big 12 Tournament and March Madness, they'll need more great games from fellow forward Bill Walker. Walker scored 22 points with five boards in just 25 minutes of last night's win, and appears to have recovered nearly all of his explosiveness after suffering a torn ACL last season. If Walker can maintain his pre-injury form, he and Beasley will make the Wildcats a very tough out this March.

  • Eye of the Tiger
Hmm. I see a theme developing.

The Memphis Tigers continued their roll through Conference USA, topping Houston 89-77. Chris Douglas-Roberts led Memphis with 30 points and Joey Dorsey hauled in 22 rebounds.

John Calipari's undefeated Tigers -- the number one team in the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls stand an excellent chance of running the table. The remainder of the conference schedule figures to present very few challenges -- Memphis is the only Conference USA team with an RPI ranking above 80. The big test will come on February 23, when the eighth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers pay a visit.

  • 1984
If there's any group of hoops devotees that will appreciate the rampant 80s nostalgia in today's post, it's St. John's fans. Better for them to think back to the days of Chris Mullin, Mark Jackson and Louie Carnesecca and avoid any connection with the current squad. The eighth-ranked Georgetown Hoyas handed the Johnnies their worst loss to a conference opponent in 28 years of Big East play, a 74-42 smackdown on the Red Storm's home court at Madison Square Garden. Vernon Macklin paced the Hoyas with 18 points off the bench.

In the same article, there's a hint that the fire Norm Roberts chants may be echoing their way into the office of the university president, the Rev. Donald Harrington.
