So I'm flipping through the channels last night... on channel 503 -- one of the various flavors of HBO -- is an Ashley Judd movie called
Normal Life. The most memorable scene in this particular film features Ms. Judd, in the midst of a mental breakdown, slicing herself to ribbons with a very dangerous-looking knife.
At the same time, on SportsCenter, the "World Wide Leader" was playing highlights -- and I use the term loosely -- of the Kentucky/Vanderbilt game.
And knowing that Ashley Judd is a huge Kentucky hoops fan, I couldn't help but wonder if her fictional breakdown was somehow related to the actual breakdown of her beloved Wildcats.
How bad was that game? Let us count the ways.
- They scored 11 points in the entire first half.
- The total margin of victory -- 41 points -- made this UK's worst loss since 1989
- It was also the team's worst conference loss ever -- going back to the creation of the SEC, way back in 1932.
Adding insult to injury: last night's SportsCenter also featured an extended discussion of ESPN's "Greatest Highlight" promotion, which allows fans to vote for their favorite sports clip. One of the clips featured last night was
Christian Laettner's buzzer-beater that beat Rick Pitino's Wildcats and put the Dookies in the 1992 Final Four. That clip is to Kentucky fans what the infamous Bill Buckner play is to Red Sox Nation and what Russ Hodges' immortal "The Giants win the pennant!" radio call is to Brooklyn Dodger faithful.
Can't really blame Ashley for doing something drastic, can we?
