Botching the End Game

Wednesday January 21, 2009
Basketball end-game strategy, for beginners:
  • When your team is losing, it's a good idea to foul. That stops the clock, and if the opponent misses the freebies, your team will have a chance to make up some ground.
  • When your team is winning, or the game is tied, the last thing you want to do is foul. That gives the opposition a chance to score -- and even the worst foul shooters hit a better percentage from the line than they do from the field.
Simple, right?

OK, now you explain it to Jamelle Horne -- because the Arizona forward seems unclear on the concept.

For the second time this season, Horne committed a "stop the clock, get the ball back, we're losing" type foul -- in a tie game. And for the second time, it cost the Wildcats a game.

Note to the guys at Rush the Court... not sure how you can have a "bonehead pantheon" and not include Chris Webber and his infamous time out.
