Andy Kennedy: Comic Genius

Tuesday February 3, 2009
Back in mid-December, Mississippi coach Andy Kennedy was arrested in Cincinnati after an altercation with a cabbie. As is now inevitable in the age of YouTube, police video of the arrest is now available online.

You must watch it.

Some of the highlights:

  • When Kennedy describes his arrest as an "international incident." (When, exactly, has Ole Miss basketball ever been a focus on the world stage? If not for Kennedy's pitiful begging on YouTube, this incident wouldn't have drawn a ton of attention outside of Oxford, Mississippi.)
  • When a member of Kennedy's entourage -- later revealed to be Mississippi's director of basketball operations -- begins cursing a blue streak at the cabbie... in an attempt to get him to admit to cursing. (Interesting bit of reverse psychology there.)
But the best line of the clip, by far, comes from a mostly-unseen police officer, who quipped, "You think we've never arrested somebody that's made national media? ... We deal with the Bengals all the time."

That right there is comedy gold. I'll say this for Andy Kennedy -- he doesn't have the common sense that God gave a fence post... but he's funny.
