One-Handed Center to Play for Manhattan College

Developing one's "off" hand -- the left, right righties -- is one of the toughest skills for a basketball player to master. Even at the NBA level, certain players have the reputation of favoring one hand or the other -- a tendency that scouts are quick to point out.

Which makes the basketball career of Kevin Laue even more impressive. He's earned a scholarship to play Division I hoops is even more remarkable considering that he has no left hand.

Literally.

Laue, a California native, has committed to play for Manhattan College starting this fall. Laue was born with no left hand. His left arm ends just below the elbow. But that didn't stop the 6'11" center averaged 10 points and five rebounds for his prep school last season.

What led Jaspers coach Barry Rohrssen to take a chance on Laue? Rohrssen cited Jim Abbott, the ex-major league pitcher with a similar birth defect who pitched a no-hitter for the New York Yankees in 1993.

Thanks for posting this inspirational story. A little boy with a very similar condition was recently born to my second cousin. This video made me realize that human perseverance and adaptability has very few limits.
