Memphis "Unable to Find" Proof of SAT Allegation

By , About.com GuideJune 2, 2009

The University of Memphis has completed an investigation into the allegation that a player from the 2007-08 national runner-up team cheated on his SAT, and was "unable to find" proof of any cheating.

What does that mean? Not much. As my wife can attest... I'm regularly unable to find my car keys, my glasses and the remote. That doesn't mean they don't exist.

Due to privacy concerns, most of the names in the formal report have been blacked out. The worst-kept secret in college basketball is this: the player in question is Derrick Rose.

Memphis representatives will meet with the NCAA infractions committee in Indianapolis on Saturday to present their case. Their defense is pretty simple -- don't punish us, we didn't know. The administration's formal response claims that they had no reason to think Rose's test scores were invalid until they received a letter from the Educational Testing Service in early May of 2008 -- about a month after Rose played his last game for the Tigers.

Convenient timing, that. Not even a glimmer of suspicion until Rose led the Tigers to 38 wins -- and within a couple of blown free throws of a national championship.

Calipari's Conference Call

Ex-Memphis coach John Calipari will participate in Saturday's meeting via conference call; he's in China this week. Calipari has reportedly been assured that he's not a target of the current investigation.
