Wooden Named Greatest Coach Ever

Friday July 31, 2009
The Sporting News assembled a panel of hall of famers, championship coaches and experts and gave them a simple task: name the greatest coach ever.

UCLA legend John Wooden -- he of the ten national championships in twelve years -- topped the list, picking up first-place votes from 57 of 117 voters. Vince Lombardi was runner-up, with Bear Bryant, Phil Jackson and Don Shula rounding out the top five.

Other college basketball legends making the list: Dean Smith (#8), Pat Summitt (#11), Bob Knight (#16), Mike Krzyzewski (#19), Adolph Rupp (#21), Pete Newell (#31), Geno Auriemma (#42) and Hank Iba (#47).

Who would be your choice as greatest ever?
