Another First for Nancy Lieberman
Nancy Lieberman was the first woman to play in a men's professional basketball league. Next, she'll become the first woman to coach in one. She was named coach of the new D-League affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks, to be based in Frisco, Texas. The new team makes its debut with the 2010-11 season.
The new team will be jointly owned by Dallas Mavericks general manager Donnie Nelson and and area businessman Evan Wyly. The management team includes longtime NBA coach Del Harris as general manager and Slam Dunk champion Spud Webb as president of basketball operations.
Generally regarded as one of the greatest female basketball players ever, Lieberman was an Olympic medalist at age 18, led Old Dominion to two AIAW titles and won two Wade Trophies. She played in the first women's professional basketball league -- the WBL -- the USBL, and for the Washington Generals -- the regular opponents of the Harlem Globetrotters.
