NBA commissioner David Stern will step down from that role on February 1, 2014. Adam Silver, Stern's long-time deputy, will take over.
That may seem an odd date for the transition; right at the height of the season, before the annual all-star break. But it is a symbolic choice; that date marks the 30th anniversary of Stern's ascent to the job.
The commish won't be heading to Florida or taking up fishing. He's expected to stay on at the league office, possibly working on expanding the NBA's interests in overseas markets.
