Keys to Brad Stevens' Success With Boston Celtics

By July 7, 2013

Follow me on:

Brad StevensThe Boston Celtics surprised nearly everyone, including yours truly, when they hired Brad Stevens from the Butler Bulldogs as their next head coach. Not only does he not have any previous NBA experience, he is younger than some of the players he'll be coaching against. At the age of 36, he is younger than former Celtics star -- and current member of the Brooklyn Nets -- Kevin Garnett.

Putting his age aside, Stevens is one heck of a basketball coach who knows his x's and o's. He led Butler to two National Championship games and kept them consistently competitive throughout his six seasons with the school.

Considering many have compared him to a younger version of Duke's Coach, Mike Krzyzewski, it's safe to assume he knows what he's doing when it comes to the game of basketball. But the NBA game is a bit different than the college game.

Keys to NBA Success

1: Don't Act Like a Know It All

If Stevens thinks can walk into the Celtics locker room and act like he knows everything there is to know about basketball, he will not earn the respect of his players. Most of his players will have more NBA experience than he does. He must realize he has more to learn about coaching in the NBA than his players likely need to learn about playing in the NBA.

2: Treat Players Like Adults

Stevens will now be coaching grown men as opposed to kids fresh out of high school. Some of his players already have their own families and kids to take care of. He must realize the importance of treating his players as equals.

3: Patience

Patience will be the most significant key to Stevens' success as an NBA coach with the Boston Celtics. Not only does he have to be patient with the team and their young players, Celtics' ownership must be patient with Stevens. He is new to the NBA game and the team is clearly in a rebuilding stage. It will take a few years before he can turn Boston back into championship contenders.
