North Carolina Tar Heels Fact Sheet

Atlantic Coast Conference

by Charlie Zegers
for About.com

Any discussion of the most significant programs in men's college basketball must include North Carolina -- the Tar Heels tip off the 2008 season with 1,950 wins all time -- second only to Kentucky (1,966), four NCAA Tournament championships, 17 trips to the Final Four, and a list of alumni that includes numerous hall of famers and all-time greats.

NCAA Tournament Championships

1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009

Notable Players and Coaches

Almost too many to count... but we'll start with legendary coach Dean Smith. Fellow hall-of-famers Larry Brown and Roy Williams -- Carolina's current coach -- have also worn Carolina Blue, as did George Karl of the Denver Nuggets and Laker general manager Mitch Kupchak.

The list of players is even more impressive, including three members of the NBA's "50 Greatest Players" list (Michael Jordan, James Worthy, and Billy Cunningham) and an extensive list of NBA stars past and present that includes Vince Carter, Antawn Jamison, Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty, Kenny Smith, Rasheed Wallace and Radhad McCants.
