St. John's Red Storm Fact Sheet
Big East Conference

by Charlie Zegers
for About.com

Arguably the most successful program not to win an NCAA Tournament championship, St. John's has won six NIT titles, reached the "Big Dance" 27 times, and ranks seventh-all time in Division I wins.

Since the retirement of hall of fame coach Lou Carnesecca, the program has fallen on hard times. Carnesecca's long-time assistant Brian Mahoney made a splash by recruiting the likes of Felipe Lopez, but his teams ultimately disappointed. The fiery Fran Fraschilla quickly wore out his welcome. Mike Jarvis brought a team keyed by Erick Barkley and Ron Artest to the elite eight, but also allowed the program to degenerate into a mess of scandals.

Current coach Norm Roberts, now in his fifth year with the school, has yet to dig the Red Storm out of the hole Jarvis dug, finishing at or near the bottom of the Big East in every year of his tenure.
