Like so many other coaches, Miller started out by running a team on the court. He was a star point guard for the University of Pittsburgh from 1987-1992 and finished his playing career as Pitt's all-time leader in assists and free-throw shooting.
After graduation, he moved directly into the coaching ranks. First, a year as a graduate assistant at Wisconsin. Then, two seasons as an assistant to Herb Sendek at Miami of Ohio, followed by a year at his alma mater, as an assistant to Ralph Willard.
In 1996 Miller re-joined Sendek, who had moved on to the head-coaching position at NC State. He worked there for five seasons, before returning to Ohio as the associated head coach to Thad Matta at Xavier. When Matta took the Ohio State job, Miller moved up to the top spot.
Under Miller, Xavier enjoyed a run as the class of the Atlantic 10, winning the conference tournament in 2006 and the regular season title in 2007, 2008 and 2009. The Musketeers reached the NCAA Tournament in each of the last four seasons, making it as far as the elite eight in 2008.
He takes over an Arizona program that was thrown in to turmoil by the sudden departure of hall of fame coach Lute Olson. The move should create an interesting rivalry with Miller's old boss, Herb Sendek, now at Arizona State.
