Definition: FIBA is the governing body for basketball on the world stage. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, FIBA's responsibilities include:
  • Establishing the official rules for international competition (which differ somewhat from NCAA and NBA rules)
  • Regulation of the transfer of players from one country to another
  • Government of all international competitions -- including the Olympics
FIBA competitions are split into five regions: Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceana.

The acronym "FIBA" comes from the original French-language name of the organization, "Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur." "Amateur" was dropped from the organization's name in 1986, but the initial was kept.

Also Known As: Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur
