Elite Camp

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Elite camps are invitation-only summer events that allow colleges to play host to 10 or 20 top recruits.

They're also a way that clever coaches and programs can exploit a hole in the NCAA rule book that's big enough to comfortable accommodate a C-130 Hercules.

The problem: there's no regulation governing what schools can and cannot pay to the "staffers" who help run these camps. A program can hire the AAU coaches of top prospects for exorbitant fees -- essentially paying off an influential figure in a player's college decision.

And it's totally legal.

Florida coach Billy Donovan is generally credited as having developed the "Elite Camp" concept, which is now used by nearly every major school in Division I.
