But here's a thought experiment for you -- what would have happened if some other team had hired Chalmers' dad?
Chalmers and his father, Ronnie, arrived at KU together -- a "package deal," so to speak. Chalmers the son was the hotshot recruit, Chalmers the father served as Bill Self's director of basketball operations.
This is not to suggest that Ronnie Chalmers was unqualified for the position -- he was a highly regarded high school coach. His most important qualification was a son with quick hands and a dynamite jumper.
Any arrangement in which coach is hired specifically to lure a particular player is forbidden under NCAA regulations -- but the current rules are difficult to enforce and are more-or-less ignored. No school has been penalized for violating the "package deal" rules in over a decade.
That situation may be addressed in the near future. On SI.com, Seth Davis reports that a new NCAA compliance-monitoring team, formed in early 2008, will be paying close attention to package deals. The NCAA is also considering stronger regulations.
