The Mountain West isn't really known as a power conference in basketball. But that could change this year, with two teams (New Mexico and BYU) in the top 25, another -- UNLV -- that has spent time in the rankings this year and can make a convincing case for an at-large bid, and still another -- San Diego State -- winners of the league's automatic bid after beating the Runnin' Rebels in the conference championship game.
College basketball fans will recognize the name of Aztecs coach Steve Fisher. Fisher took over the coaching job at Michigan just before the 1989 NCAA Tournament -- which the Wolverines, led by sweet-shooting forward Glen Rice -- would go on to win. Fisher went on to recruit Michigan's legendary "fab five" -- the freshman class that featured future NBA players Chris Webber, Jalen Rose and Juwan Howard and reached the national title game in 1992 and 1993.
