1. LeBron James
Assuming he decides to hit the open market, LBJ could be the biggest free agent in NBA history. Though it seems like he's been around forever, the two-time reigning MVP won't reach his 26th birthday until December.
Possible Destinations: Every team with the space to sign a max free agent could be in the mix -- but most observers think LeBron will pick a big market if he chooses to leave Cleveland. New York, Chicago and the Los Angeles Clippers have the money to spend.
2. Dwyane Wade
D-Wade is one of the top two or three talents in the game - he proved that against the Celtics in the first round. Of course, his team also proved that they aren't good enough to compete for a title unless they find Wade some help.
Possible Destinations: Odds are, D-Wade stays right where he is, as Pat Riley will have the dollars to add an elite big man (Chris Bosh? Carlos Boozer?) to complement Wade. If Wade decides to leave South Beach, his hometown Bulls will be quick to make an offer.
3. Dirk Nowitzki
No one really thought Nowitzki was in play... but Dallas' disappointing first-round playoff loss may have the ex-MVP looking for a change of scenery.
Possible Destinations: Too early to tell -- but it would be fun seeing Nowitzki play in Mike D'Antoni's offense, wouldn't it?
4. Amar'e Stoudemire
Once considered a lock to move on -- the Suns have been dangling Stoudemire in trade offers for years -- but this year's deep playoff run may motivate Phoenix to retain him.
Possible Destinations: In my humble opinion, any player willing to leave Steve Nash behind should have his head examined. But Stoudemire could go to New York and be reuinted with Mike D'Antoni, or become Dwyane Wade's running buddy in Miami.
5. Chris Bosh
The superstar most likely to be changing addresses, Bosh has been running a "should I stay or should I go" poll via his Twitter feed.
Possible Destinations: Bosh would be an ideal complement to either James (should the Knicks actually sign two max players) or Wade. He could also become the low-post scorer Chicago so desperately needs. The Texas native could also wind up in Houston.
6. Joe Johnson
Widely regarded as "Plan B" for teams that aren't able to land a James or Wade or Bosh, Johnson's stock may be hurt by Atlanta's disappointing showing against the Magic in the second round of this spring's playoffs.
Possible Destinations: Like Bosh, Johnson is often mentioned in "if the Knicks can sign two max players" scenarios. He may be the player New York is most likely to actually land.
7. Carlos Boozer
An excellent scorer and rebounder, Boozer will be a hot target for any team that swings and misses on Stoudemire or Bosh.
Possible Destinations: According to the rumor mill, Miami and Chicago have been trying to acquire Boozer for years.
8. David Lee
The Knicks would love to hang on to their only all-star, but will need to renounce Lee's rights in order to make two max contract offers. Don't discount the possibility of Lee being involved in a sign-and-trade deal this summer.
Possible Destinations: The Nets are reportedly interested in stealing Lee from their cross-river rivals, and he'd be a great fit in the frontcourt alongside Brook Lopez.
9. Paul Pierce
Like Nowitzki, Pierce doesn't figure in many of the 2010 free agent rumors because most observers don't really think he'll leave Boston. But with the Celtics looking old for most of this season, Pierce may look at this summer as his last chance to cash in.
Possible Destinations: Boston is likeliest, but Piece was raised in Southern California, and the Clippers have a conspicuous opening at the three...
10. Ray Allen
Allen might not be a max player any more, but he proved during the Celtics' run to the Finals that he's still got gas left in the tank.
Possible Destinations: His most likely destination might be Boston, if the Celtics decide to make one more run with their current core. If not, he'd be a great complement to James or Wade, especially if he's willing to take a little less cash.
11. Best of the Rest
Other players that could be available this summer:
- Ray Allen is clearly on the down side of his career, but he's still one of the game's top shooters.
- Rudy Gay is one of the more interesting up-and-coming players in the free agent class, but is he worth a max deal?
- John Salmons -- if he opts out -- could get offers after finishing the season strong for Milwaukee.
- Josh Childress could return from overseas as a restricted free agent (Atlanta still owns his rights) and could help a lot of teams
- Lots of executives love Tyrus Thomas' potential
