Dominique Ferguson

Top Recruit Heading to Florida International

By , About.com Guide

Early in his high school career, Dominique Ferguson was projected as the type of player that could land at a top program, play for a year or two and then make the jump to the NBA. He may still reach the next level -- but the route he'll travel looks a little different today. On August 7, 2009, he became the first big-time recruit to sign with Isiah Thomas at Florida International.

A 6'8", 200-pound combo forward, Ferguson is ranked as the eighth-best recruit in the class of 2010 by ESPN/Scouts Inc. and 23rd by Rivals. Though his Summer 2009 play has received generally lukewarm reviews from scouts, Ferguson was still drawing interest from the biggest of the big-time programs; Kentucky, Duke, Indiana, UCLA and Arizona, among others, were involved before his surprising commitment to the Golden Panthers. He'll finish out his high school career at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia.

Size and athleticism are his strengths. He runs the floor well, and has the ability to spot-up for a jumper off the break or drive to the rim and finish. His decision-making can be suspect; though he has a good handle, especially for his size, he can over-dribble or be forced into bad shots. On defense, he has the size to defend fours and the agility to play out on the wing.

He's a talented-enough player to make a real contribution in one of the top conferences. In the Sun Belt, he should dominate.
