Sacramento Kings

Pacific Division

By , About.com Guide

Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson raised the possibility that the Kings will look to move if the city doesn't come up with a new arena.

Johnson -- whom NBA fans will remember as a point guard for the Phoenix Suns -- told reporters:

If we don't have a clear path to an arena in the not too distant future, then we as Sacramentans need to know that (the Kings) very well may look elsewhere.

Johnson made the statement on September 22, 2009 shortly after learning that the city's bid to host an NCAA Tournament site was rejected because of concerns over conditions at the Arco Arena. The current Arco Arena -- the second building to bear that name -- has been home to the Kings since 1988. It is the smallest arena in the NBA by size, and second-smallest (to Orlando's Amway Arena) by seating capacity, which is 17,317 for basketball.

Team History

One of the NBA's original franchises, the Kings were founded in 1945 as the Royals, based in Rochester, New York. They moved to Cincinnati in 1957.

In 1972, they were renamed "The Kings" and started splitting home games between Kansas City and Omaha. They settled in Kansas City in 1975 until their move to Northern California ten years later.

The Kings and the NBA have been campaigning for a new arena to be built in downtown Sacramento or at the Cal Expo facility for years, but voters rejected a ballot measure to fund construction with a sales tax increase.

If the situation in Sacramento isn't resolved, Las Vegas looms as a possible destination. The Kings are owned by the Maloof brothers, who also own the Palms Resort and Casino.

Sacramento has been home to the franchise since 1985.
